NTR's widow set to make comeback in AP elections Sunday, February 29 2004 17:03 Hrs (IST) Hyderabad:
Emerging from a prolonged hibernation, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister NTR's widow Lakshmi Parvathi, whose NTR-TDP (Telugu Desam Party) drew a blank in the last elections, is set to resurrect her political career in the coming polls with plans to align with Congress which has, however, not responded to her feelers so far.
Stirring the hornet's nest ahead of elections, Parvathi has come out with a two-volume biography of NTR, holding the present TDP leadership responsible for the death of the charismatic hero and patriarch of TDP eight years ago after he was dislodged from power.
The biography, titled 'Eduruleni Manishi' (Invincible Man) revives the fierce controversy surrounding the death of NTR on January 18, 1996, five months after he was dethroned in a midnight political coup led by his son-in-law N Chandrababu Naidu, who had split the party with a majority of legislators backing him.
"I want to tell the world who are the real culprits responsible for the untimely death of this great leader. NTR suffered acute mental agony and trauma as he was betrayed by the same people whom he had considered as his dear ones," Parvathi said.
Parvathi, who was forced into political oblivion after her party's rout in the previous polls and subsequent desertions, refuses to be written off. Keen to revive her political career hoping to harness anti-incumbency factor, she has approached the main Opposition Congress for a possible alliance.
"I have sought at least six Assembly seats for my party. I am waiting for their (Congress) response," she said.
