Advani to embark on 33-day 'India Shining Yatra'
Tuesday, March 2 2004 17:34 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Following up on his two 'Yatras' since 1990 which changed the country's political landscape, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani will criss-cross the country in a specially built bus during a 33-day 'India Shining Yatra' starting March 10 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The Yatra, the third to be undertaken by him since 1990 when his famous 'Rath Yatra' led to the fall of V P Singh Government, will focus on the achievements of the Vajpayee Government, he said dismissing suggestions that it was aimed at catapulting him to "Number One position".

It will start from Kanyakumari covering 8000 kms spread over 121 Lok Sabha constituencies across several States in two phases. The first phase of the Yatra would conclude on March 26 in Amritsar.

The second phase of the Yatra would be launched on March 30 from Porbandar coinciding with Ram Navami and culminate in Puri on April 14, Advani told a press conference in New Delhi.

Replying to questions, Advani dismissed suggestions that the Yatra was aimed at catapulting him to number one position and said that the exercise was to seek a renewed mandate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) under the inspiring leadership of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

"You were wrong then, you are wrong even today," he shot back when a questioner suggested that his 'Somnath to Ayodhya' Rath Yatra in 1990 had catapulted him to number one position and whether a similar plan was behind this.
