Security tightened in Gujarat for Muharram Tuesday, March 2 2004 14:58 Hrs (IST) Ahmedabad:
Security has been beefed up all over Gujarat, including Vadodara, in view of Muharram today (Mar 2, 2004) even as the condition of the person, stabbed last night (Mar 1, 2004) in communal trouble-hit Panigate area of Vadodara city is reported to be stable, police said.
The victim was attacked by unknown persons when he was going home with his wife in Pangate area that recently witnessed heavy communal clashes during pre-Muharram function in which two were killed and 14 injured.
This sudden bout of violence had apparently led to Tajiya procession being called off in Vadodara yesterday.
However, police has beefed up security in the city and have also made several preventive arrests during combing operations, Joint Commissioner of Police K Kumaraswami said.
One person was killed in police firing, one stabbed to death and 14 injured in stone pelting and clashes in Panigate area recently.
Meanwhile, police have made elaborate security arrangements including deployment of Rapid Action force, State Reserve Police and Home guard for Tajiya procession in Ahmedabad and at the disputed Dargah at Pirana in the
outskirts of the city.
DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police)-rural Manoj Agarwal said that as per Gujarat High Court directives issued yesterday, the Tajiya procession would be allowed from the Pirana Dargah and adequate security including mounted horse police would be provided to the devotees.
Extensive combing operations were also conducted by police and several preventive arrests made.
