Assailants break into Varanasi jail, kill undertrial Tuesday, March 2 2004 12:16 Hrs (IST) Varanasi:
Six armed men barged into the district jail and opened indiscriminate fire killing an undertrial and injuring three police personnel this morning (Mar 2, 2004).
According to the police, the gunmen managed to get into the visitors' gallery in the jail premises at around 10 a.m. on the pretext of meeting the undertrial Bansi Yadav who was killed in the shooting.
Yadav, an accused in the killing of a Congress worker Mahesh Yadav was apparently the target of the gunmen, they said.
A manhunt has been launched to nab the assailants who escaped they said, adding an inquiry is being conducted as to how the attackers managed to get into the premises on a public holiday.
