Lashkar involved in Jammu central jail attack Wednesday, March 3 2004 17:21 Hrs (IST) Jammu:
The banned Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was involved in the Jammu central jail attack, in which six persons, including a Pakistani 'fidayeen' militant, were killed and six others injured here this morning (Mar 3, 2004), a senior police officer said.
Deputy inspector general of police Jammu-Kathua range Farooq Ahmed said a suicide squad member of LeT had come on a scooter for the attack to engineer the escape of militants being produced in TADA court in the jail premises.
The militant was later killed in retaliatory action, he said, adding that LeT outfit had planned these attacks.
The slain LeT militant was identified as Mohammad Bilal alias Abu Asad Ullah of Askardu tribal area in Pakistan, the DIG said.
Besides an AK rifle, four grenades and some magazines were recovered from him. Some papers, which mentioned "how to attack and how to escape" were also confiscated.
Meanwhile, deputy controller prisons Sahibzada Rafiq said one unarmed warden Jarnail Singh had snatched the rifle from the militant before shooting him dead.
