It's Poonam Dhillon's turn to join the BJP bandwagon
Wednesday, March 3 2004 20:24 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Bollywood parade continued, with actress Poonam Dhillon joining the party today (Mar 3, 2004), saying that her joining the Congress earlier "may have been in a hurry".

"In the last one and a half years, I have been thinking about it. I felt that BJP is the right place with the right people," she told reporters after joining the party in the presence of general secretaries Pramod Mahajan and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and party spokesman Prakash Javadekar.

Dhillon, who had campaigned for the Congress in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections said, "During the last one to one and a half years I have been thinking and maybe in a hurry I took the step of joining the Congress. Stability is necessary and the BJP-led Government is not only stable, but also able."

"Some years back I made my entry into Congress, but every person has a right to change their mind. We are socially aware and politically conscious artists. At this stage, we have to do something for society," she said.

However, she declined to comment on the foreign origin issue of Congress president Sonia Gandhi saying, "I don't think it is proper to talk about anybody."

The Bollywood star's entry into the party follows that of celluloid stars like Hema Malini, Jitendra and Suresh Oberoi.

Asked whether she would be contesting the Lok Sabha elections, she said, "I have not thought of contesting elections and I leave it to the BJP leadership."
