Gujarat police has launched a State wide hunt with six teams conducting combing operations to apprehend 10 prisoners, who fled the sub-jail in Anand district after injuring two security guards late last night (Mar 3, 2004).
Some of the 32 prisoners, lodged inside the sub-jail at Borsad taluka, complained of illness and lured a guard towards their cell on this pretext, District Superintendent of Police (DSP) B S Jebalia said.
The prisoners snatched the guard's rifle and hit him, Jebalia said adding, they also attacked another guard before escaping.
"Six police teams, including that of Local Crime Branch (LCB) have been sent to various parts of the district to apprehend the prisoners, who were undergoing various terms for crimes like robberies and burglaries," the DSP said.
Police has also intimated all check posts to maintain a vigil, he added.
The condition of the armed guard, who was hit on the head with the butt of his rifle is stable, the official said adding, both the injured are being treated at a local hospital.
Meanwhile, a departmental inquiry has been ordered to probe if there was any connivance between the prisoners and the guards on duty as the preliminary investigation revealed that the head constable on duty was not at the post when the incident occurred, the DSP added.
