Communal tension in Vadodara, police open fire
Thursday, March 4 2004 09:50 Hrs (IST)

Vadodara: Police tonight (Mar 3, 2004) opened fire and lobbed several tear-gas shells to disperse stone-pelting mobs in Yakutpura, Hathikhana, Fatehpura and Vadi falling under city and Vadi police station areas, a top police official said.

City Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Sinha said the situation was under control and nobody was injured. Rapid Action Force, Border Wing Home Guards and an SRP company have been patrolling the area and keeping constant vigil.

Unconfirmed reports, however, said that several country-made "Sutli" bombs were hurled in the areas amidst rumours that a blast had taken place. People belonging to both communities came out of their house and started pelting stones at each other and two people were injured.
