Mumbai cops to muse on discharge of blast accused Sunday, March 7 2004 11:41 Hrs (IST) Mumbai:
Shaken by the recent decision of a special court to discharge nine accused arrested under POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) in the Ghatkopar bomb blast case, the Mumbai Crime Branch is on an introspection mode, ascertaining what went wrong in the chargesheet.
The special court's decision on the prosecution's plea has come as a bolt from the blue since the discharged accused have also been named as accused in the Mulund blast case, charges for which are yet to be framed.
"It is a serious matter if accused in one of important blast cases are discharged for lack of evidence, particularly when investigations were done by one of the most experienced lot of officers," a senior Mumbai Crime Branch official said on the condition of anonymity.
According to the official, exercise has already begun to examine the chargesheet afresh so that the evidences can be presented in more effective manner.
"Besides, there are some more absconding accused in the blast case, who are being searched now, whose statement could prove vital for the case," the official added.
A special court had on March four discharged nine accused arrested under POTA for the Ghatkopar blast case of December 2, 2002, stating that there was not sufficient evidence against them.
Two persons were killed and 49 injured in the blast that had occurred in a Best bus outside Ghatkopar railway station.
