Political 'poaching' on the rise in Andhra Pradesh Sunday, March 7 2004 14:25 Hrs (IST) Hyderabad:
Every election season springs a new crop of turncoats, termed as potential prospects at the hustings, and it's no different this time in Andhra Pradesh with popular personalities or their kin crossing fences to score a point or two.
Congress first pulled the biggest coup by roping in Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's brother N Rammurthy Naidu into its fold ahead of the election schedule giving its cadre a big boost in Chittoor district.
TDP (Telugu Desam Party) hit back by roping in senior Congress leader Dr M V Mysoora Reddy giving a big jolt to Opposition leader Dr Y S Rajsekahar Reddy in his home district of Cuddapah.
NTR's family continues to hog the limelight in every election and his elder son-in-law Dr Daggubati Venkateswara Rao coasted to Congress shores after a brief sojourn with BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party).
Dr Rao and Naidu had split the TDP and pulled a family coup overthrowing NTR and taking over the reins. While Naidu took control of the party Dr Rao slowly faded away and joined BJP before it aligned with TDP.
Film star BJP Mahila Morcha vice-president Vijayashanti, continues to baffle political circles, who had earlier announced that she would work for a separate Telengana Statehood and rumours were floated that she will be joining Telengana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).
Dispelling doubts that she is quitting the party, she attended the public meeting during BJP national executive meeting but did not show up at the BJP Mahila Ranabheri held recently and attended by Union Minister Sushma Swaraj among others.
