EC notice to TDP over 'booklet of achievements'
Tuesday, March 9 2004 13:11 Hrs (IST)

Hyderabad: Taking note of a complaint by the Opposition Congress in Andhra Pradesh, the Election Commission has issued notices to ruling TDP (Telugu Desam Party) and State Information and Public Relations Department calling for details regarding publication of a booklet on the Government's achievements.

"We will examine it and submit a report," an official of the Information Department said today (Mar 9, 2004).

The Congress had, in a petition to the State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Narayana Rao on March 6, alleged that the TDP Government was violating election code of conduct by distributing a booklet on its achievements and demanded an inquiry into the issue.

"Lakhs of copies of the 94-page booklet carrying Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's photo are being distributed after the election notification was issued. This amounts to gross violation of the poll code," Congress spokesman K Rosaiah said.

While the election law is specific that any booklet, leaflet or brochure should contain the names of the publisher and printer, the booklet titled "100 months of development" does not contain any of these details, the Congress leader pointed out.

Stating that lakhs of these booklets were printed by the State Government with taxpayers' money, he said, "We request you to conduct necessary inquiry into the matter and stop circulation of the booklets forthwith. We also request you to take appropriate action against the Government and the ruling party."
