Police has arrested a Pakistani national for allegedly indulging in espionage and passing highly sensitive information to Pak intelligence.
Arshad Mohammad alias Malik, a native of Khanpur town in Rahimyarkhan district of Pakistan was nabbed from an internet cafe in Hyderabad last night (Mar 8, 2004) and seized incriminating classified documents from him, City Police Commissioner R P Singh told reporters today (Mar 9).
Police also recovered a computer floppy, camera and some exposed film rolls, photographs of Army Units and locations, sketch map of twin cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad, copies of e-mails and a cash of Rs 31,000 of Indian currency from his possession, Singh said.
Mohammad settled in Hyderabad since August 2003, was found to be indulging in espionage and passing the same to Pakistani intelligence officers through e-mail, he said.
During enquiry Mohammad revealed that he was approached by two Pak intelligence officers in November 2002 and persuaded him to work for them. Later, he was given extensive training in carrying out espionage activities for three months at a training facility in Rahimyarkhan district, Singh said.
The Pak national, who changed his name often, was sent to Dhaka on completion of training on a Pakistan passport. In March 2003, Mohammad was provided a Bangladesh passport by Pak intelligence who reached Kolkata via Behnapur.
