Cricket telecast: Prasar Bharti joins the case Friday, March 12 2004 17:15 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
Prasar Bharti has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court to make it a party in case Ten Sports approaches the apex court challenging the Madras High Court ruling asking the channel to allow Doordarshan to telecast the Indo-Pak series.
Sources in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Prasar Bharti said the move is to prevent any ex-parte order being passed by the Supreme Court in the matter.
Asked whether Ten Sports had approached the Supreme Court in this matter, R K Singh (advisor to the channel's distributor) said, "We have not approached SC. We will take a decision only after we get to see the Madras High Court order."
Earlier today (Mar 12, 2004), the Madras High Court directed Ten Sports to permit DD to telecast the Indo-Pak series commencing tomorrow, which the channel said it would do.
The direction was given by a division bench of the High Court, comprising Chief Justice B Subhashan Reddy and Justice M Thanikachalam, while hearing a petition seeking a direction to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to secure the telecasting rights from the private Ten Sports for Prasar Bharati.
The bench also directed Doordarshan to use the logo of Ten Sports and carry their commercials in all the telecasts.
