BSP dampens Congress plans; rules out alliance Saturday, March 13 2004 16:50 Hrs (IST) Lucknow:
Pouring cold water on Congress plans, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) today (Mar 13, 2004) ruled out any electoral alliance with the party either in Uttar Pradesh or at the national level.
Addressing a huge rally at the sprawling Ambedkar Maidan in Lucknow, the BSP national president Mayawati declared that the party would go all alone in the coming Lok Sabha elections and would have no truck with Congress.
Attacking Congress for extending support to the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led coalition Government in the State, Mayawati accused the Samajwadi Party (SP) of having a tacit understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
"Congress is sailing in two boats and has been trying to grab the opportunity of having an alliance with the BSP while continuing its love for the Samajwadi Party. This we outrightly reject," she said.
Mayawati, who had been authorised by her party in January to decide on the alliance issue, had been keeping the Congress on tenterhooks for nearly two months.
