Well-known cartoonist Rasipuram Krishnaswamy, popularly known as R K Laxman, was presented the coveted 'Yashwantrao Chavan Rashtriya Puraskar' for national integration, democratic values for social and economic development in the country.
The septuagenarian, cartoonist for 'The Times of India' whose 'common man' made him a household name, was felicitated by eminent journalist and 'The Hindu' editor N Ram, at a function today (Mar 12, 2004) to mark the 91st birth anniversary of the great Maratha statesman.
The award includes a cash prize of Rs two lakh and a citation. NCP (National Congress Party) president and chairman of the Y B Chavan Trust, Sharad Pawar presided.
Speaking on the occasion, Ram said that Laxman was a national treasure and an unambiguous genius, whose creativity, striking originality and strong conviction dominated his style of cartooning.
"Through the silent common man who speaks a thousand words through cartoons, Laxman has given voice to the Indian masses and their feelings," he added.
Chairman of Y B Chavan Trust, Sharad Pawar said that the cartoons by Laxman highlighted prevailing problems without attacking anybody personally.
"His cartoons proved that they can be better and more effective than editorials," he added.
Earlier, replying to the felicitation, Laxman said he was overwhelmed by the honour.
