Breakaway Hurriyat insists on UN resolution for talks
Tuesday, March 16 2004 20:58 Hrs (IST)

Srinagar: A day after Hurriyat Conference (Ansari) expressed its willingness to have second round of talks with the Centre, breakaway Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani today (March 16, 2004) said any talks with New Delhi without involving the UN or a friendly country was against the constitution of the separatist amalgam.

As per the Hurriyat constitution, the amalgam should press for implementation of the UN resolution for resolving the Kashmir issue, the rival Hurriyat said in a statement.

"As far as dialogue is concerned, it has been made amply clear in the constitution that the nature of talks shall be tripartite and be held under the supervision of the UN or a friendly country," it said.

On moves to bring rival factions under one platform, the statement said though the Hurriyat was of the view that unity was key to success of the "freedom movement, all those who act against the movement and create misgivings in minds of the people are criminals of the nation".

"Hurriyat considers friendship or unity with such criminals as a death knell for the freedom movement."

The statement said the Hurriyat would like to make it clear that it would not deviate from its stand but would always remain eager for unity and "will welcome any individual or group which believes in continuation of the struggle for independence and accept the constitution framed for the purpose".
