US to push Musharraf to end clandestine nuke deals Tuesday, March 16 2004 13:55 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
The United States today (Mar 16, 2004) said it will engage Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to ensure that clandestine nuclear export network led by scientist A Q Khan is put to an end.
It also made clear that it has taken no decision to sell sophisticated F-16 warplanes to Islamabad.
Visiting US Secretary of State Colin Powell, who held wide-ranging talks with External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, said he would also take up the issue of cross-border
infiltration across the line of control (LoC) with Musharraf when he meets him later this week so that there is permanent stop to it.
Replying to questions about clandestine nuclear network headed by the Pakistan scientist, Powell said, "We are pleased that the network has been broken up... I will be speaking to
President Musharraf. I am confident he is determined... much more work has to be done."
The Secretary of State stressed that Washington would not be satisfied till the entire network was gone.
