New Delhi: Ending months of speculation, Rahul Gandhi, son of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, will make his electoral debut as the party today (March 21, 2004) announced his candidature from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency shifting the mother to adjacent Rae Bareli.

The names of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi figure in the third list of 31 candidates spread over six States announced by party general secretary Ambika Soni this evening.

Asked about Priyanka's entry into the electoral fray, Soni told reporters, "It would be announced at an appropriate time."

Rae Bareli seat had been held by Captain Satish Sharma, who is considered close to the Gandhi family.

Amethi and Rae Bareli have been traditional strongholds of the Gandhi family with Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi representing the two constituencies several times.
