EC may issue campaign guidelines for parties
Monday, March 22 2004 19:53 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: The Election Commission is likely to issue guidelines to political parties to avoid personalised attacks during the campaign in the coming elections.

This, apparently, follows complaint from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Congress against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) supremo J Jayalalithaa's election speeches attacking Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the foreign origin issue and various other parties making mutual allegations in this regard.

The DMK-Congress combine had recently sought the intervention of the Commission on the personal attack by the ruling AIADMK in the electioneering.
