Second round of Advani, Hurriyat talks begin Saturday, March 27 2004 16:45 Hrs (IST) New Delhi:
The second round of talks between Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and Hurriyat Conference began in New Delhi today (Mar 27, 2004), as the amalgam made it clear that it will try to resolve all issues including Human Rights violation at the table that cropped immediately after their first meeting on January 22 this year.
The Deputy Prime Minister was assisted by Union Home Secretary Anil Baijal and Centre's interlocutor on Kashmir N N Vohra, while the Hurriyat delegation comprised its chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari and senior leaders Abdul Gani Bhat, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Bilal Lone.
Ahead of his meeting with Hurriyat leaders, Advani was briefed by Vohra about progress since his last talks with amalgam leaders and steps taken to ensure there were no Human Rights violations.
The Hurriyat delegation would stress on release of detenues from prisons, bringing back all Kashmiri prisoners lodged in various jails of the country into the State, reduction of para-military personnel within the valley and complete end to the Human Rights violations in the State.
"We will raise issues pertaining to Human Rights of civilians. We are hopeful that all issues will be resolved at the dialogue table," Hurriyat chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari said ahead of the meeting.
The Centre is likely to assure the Hurriyat leadership that releasing of detenues would be a gradual process. Sixty-nine people have been released so far since January 22 with 43 cases being recommended by the joint screening committee and 26 by the Jammu and Kashmir Government.
