We are very comfortable with Vajpayee: Pak PM
Monday, March 29 2004 22:53 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Observing that the Indo-Pak composite dialogue process depends on how the Indian elections would go, Pakistan Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali tonight (Mar 29, 2004) said, "we are very comfortable" with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and find his views, stature and thinking "very positive".

"I understand that the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is favoured to win (the elections) and I must admit that we are very comfortable with Prime Minister Vajpayee. His views, his stature, his thinking -- we find all these very positive," Jamali told 'Sahara Samay' television.

Noting that the foreign secretaries of the two countries have to meet sometime in May or June, he said there was a reference to a composite dialogue. "I don't know. It all depends on your elections and how they go".

Jamali said for humanitarian reasons, "Pakistan is prepared to be flexible on Kashmir but in my understanding, flexibility has to work two ways and three ways for anything to succeed."

"There is no change in our stand on Kashmir but we must work very hard to keep the dialogue going," the television channel quoted him as saying in a release.

"India knows, Pakistan knows, our people know that a proper atmosphere is necessary for any dialogue to succeed. But there can be no change in our stand. It is nothing to do with ego or anything of that kind," he said.

On the issue of terrorism, the Pakistan Prime Minister said since 9/11 attack in the US, the problem of terrorism has become acute.

"Some countries are able to surmount terrorism through better governance. But in many other countries, these problems persist," he said.

"In Pakistan, we are trying to control terrorism, we need security and stability. It is the Government's responsibility to eliminate terrorism," Jamali stressed.
