Cong a rural bride, won't name candidates: Naidu Monday, March 29 2004 18:53 Hrs (IST) Ahmedabad:
If Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) star campaigner Narendra Modi was scathing in his attack on Congress, BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu chose to mix some humour, rhyme and alliteration in scoffing at the main Opposition, when he likened it to a "rural bride", who is shy to name her husband.
Naidu, while addressing party workers in Ahmedabad, said the present situation of Congress, which is still grappling for candidates against BJP, reminded him of his marriage.
"After marriage, I went to my native village where rural womenfolk stopped my wife and told her that she could enter the house only after declaring the name of her husband," the BJP president said.
"Being a traditional Indian woman, she hesitated to speak my name and after 10 minutes and lots of efforts she said 'Venkaiah Naidu', he said, imitating how his wife declared his name in a low voice, as Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and other BJP leaders had a hearty laugh.
"Congress too is like a newly-wed bride. If asked to name the candidates for Lok Sabha polls, they will similarly hesitate and say we cannot say just now," Naidu said.
Naidu said the very existence of Congress after the Lok Sabha polls is a question mark and there is wave across entire nation that BJP must be voted to power and Vajpayee must be the Prime Minister.
Rhyming his attack on Congress, Naidu said it has no candidate who can match the calibre, capacity, contact and character of Vajpayee, who has dedication, dynamism and discipline.
"Such situation prevails in the entire country for Congress. Even in Gandhinagar, they are still searching hard for some sacrificial goat against Advani," he said.
"While BJP is united, Congress is divided, we are clear they are unclear. BJP has conviction for coalition, Congress has compulsion for coalition. We have leader, they have a question mark. We have a vision, they have confusion. While BJP is forward, they are backward and their situation is awkward," was how Naidu described the Opposition party.
Scoffing at the coalition tactics used by Congress, Naidu said one day they run to Maya (Mayawati), second day to Mulayam (Mulayam Singh Yadav), third day to Karuna (Karunanidhi) and fourth day to Communist Party.
"But Deve Gowda of Janata Dal (secular) tells Congress that it is 'yes' in Delhi, but 'no' in Karnataka. NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) leader Sharad Power says it will co-operation in Maharashtra, operation in Delhi and then separation. Communist Party says Delhi mein dosti (friendship), Kolkata mein kushti (wrestling)," the BJP president said.
Naidu said that Congress is in a state of total confusion and results of the Lok Sabha polls are "already" out.
