PM to visit Shantiniketan, CBI to take over probe
Tuesday, March 30 2004 20:13 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: A 20-member CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) team would start investigation into the Tagore medal heist tomorrow (Mar 31, 2004) before the scheduled visit of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Shantiniketan, as the CID has failed to achieve a breakthrough so far.

West Bengal Chief Secretary Ashok Gupta told reporters in Kolkata that the CBI team would arrive tomorrow and the day after in two groups en route to Shantiniketan to take over the probe.

IGP (Law and Order) Chhayan Mukherjee said that the CBI team would be headed by Joint Director, Special Crime Branch.

The team would include a DIG, Director of Central Forensic Science Laboratory, a principal scientific officer, an officer of SP rank besides one DSP, two inspectors and two sub-inspectors.

The IGP said that as per CBI's request, officers of CID, now investigating the case and local police had been asked to be present in Shantiniketan to assist them.

He said that despite interrogation of several persons, no arrest had been made so far. ''We are carrying out investigation on the basis of all available inputs. It is not a single-track probe.''

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the 'Acharya' (Chancellor) of Viswa-Bharati University would visit Shantiniketan on April 2.

Vice-Chancellor Sujit Basu said in Shantiniketan that the Prime Minister would visit the museum, into which burglars broke into, at the Rabindra Bhawan besides holding a one to one meeting with him.
