PM to canvass for each BJP candidate over phone, cable
Thursday, April 1 2004 20:10 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: While Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party) mascot in the coming Lok Sabha polls, may not be personally visiting each and every constituency the party is contesting, land and mobile phones across the country would soon be ringing and local cable networks bombarded with his appeal to vote for party candidates by name.

Vajpayee spent over four hours yesterday (Mar 31, 2004) recording the names of 146 party candidates and constituencies going to polls in the first phase, party sources said.

The Prime Minister's voice mentioning the names of the candidates would be synchronised with his earlier general appeal and would be played in the constituencies concerned, they said.

Vajpayee was also filmed mentioning the names of the candidates and constituencies and these would be provided to the candidates to be suitably used in their respective areas, the sources said.

Earlier, the party had relayed Vajpayee's personal message over landline and cellular phones appealing to the electorate to vote NDA (National Democratic Alliance) back to power.

The party is also unlikely to go on an advertisement blitzkrieg as the public response to it was not up to its expectations, the sources said.
