'Predicting TN polls as bad as predicting one-dayers' Friday, April 2 2004 15:06 Hrs (IST) Chennai:
Coming down heavily on opinion polls, which gave lesser number of seats to the AIADMK-BJP (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-Bharatiya Janata Party) combine, AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa today (Apr 2, 2004) said pollsters never predicted rightly in Tamil Nadu and they were certain to keep their "unblemished prediction record in tact".
"Pollsters' predictions of election results in Tamil Nadu are as reliable as predicting the results of one-day cricket matches. They should perhaps rely on the toss of a coin instead of making pseudo erudite inferences based on thin samples," she said in a statement.
Describing the 'Indian Express' and 'NDTV' and 'India Today' poll surveys as "absurd," she said such surveys had invariably been proved wrong since it revealed a "total lack of understanding of the lifeline of democracy" - the people of the country.
Even seasoned psephologists had often admitted that their opinion polls had mostly been wrong in the case of Tamil Nadu, she said adding, "Given the dubious track record of pollsters in predicting poll results in Tamil Nadu, the latest survey has to be dismissed outright."
She also condemned the rating given to her by the pollsters as "lowest ranking Chief Minister."
