Militant threat makes campaigning low key in Manipur Saturday, April 3 2004 11:45 Hrs (IST)
Imphal:
With the two militant organisations RPF (Revolutionary People's Front) and KYKL (Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup) asking the Congress and BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) to stop all their poll-related activity, the fate of candidates of these two parties in Manipur has become uncertain what with their campaigning having received a severe jolt.
''We may concentrate on grass-root level workers of the Congress since we cannot openly campaign for the forthcoming polls,'' said a Congress general secretary on condition of anonymity.
Pointing out that the Congress is an old party with a large number of supporters, he clarifies that the party has not so far received any letter or telephone call from any militant outfit criticising the performance of Congress-led Secular Progressive Front (SPF) Ministry in the State.
However, he admitted that party leaders were aware of media reports saying that the outlawed Revolutionary People's Front had "banned" poll-related activities of Congress since the SPF failed to prevent alleged atrocities on civilians by Central forces and to develop the State.
The present Manipur Higher Education Minister, T Meinya Singh, is the lone Congress candidate in the State which has two Parliamentary seats, Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur, since the nomination papers of Francis Ngajokpa (Congress) in Outer Manipur was rejected after scrutiny.
Separatist KYKL said that it would kill any leader or worker campaigning for the State unit president and candidate, Th Chaoba Singh, for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
