Sri Lanka's election chief rules out re-poll Sunday, April 4 2004 16:16 Hrs (IST)
Colombo:
Ruling out re-poll in two areas allegedly marred by irregularities, Sri Lanka's election chief today (Apr 4, 2004) said that the final results of the Parliamentary elections will be announced.
"I do not believe that the reports I received warrant a fresh poll in those two districts," Election Chief Dayananda Dissanayake said at a meeting of representatives of political parties that contested Friday's (Apr 2, 2004) elections.
The declaration of results was held up yesterday (Apr 3, 2004) after complaints of vote rigging in two out of the 22 electoral districts.
Though political parties wanted the vote in the Northern Jaffna peninsula cancelled on charges of rigging, Dayananda ruled it out stating that he had no legal power to do it.
The Election Commission has said that with 10.31 million votes counted, President Chandrika Kumaratunga's Freedom alliance leads with a 47.2 per cent vote share. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's United National Party was lagging behind with 37.9 per cent.
