Chandrika Kumaratunga's party wins Lanka polls Sunday, April 4 2004 20:39 Hrs (IST)
Colombo:
President Chandrika Kumaratunga's Freedom Alliance (FA) today (April 4, 2004) emerged as the largest single party in Sri Lanka's Parliamentary elections, winning 105 seats in the 225-member Parliament, yet short of a simple majority, indicating a coalition Government.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's United National Party (UNP) won 82 seats while an alliance of Tamil candidates bagged 22 seats.
Nine seats went to a party of all-clergy Buddhist monks while a Muslim party bagged five seats. Two other Tamil parties got one seat each.
The official results were announced after election officials decided not to conduct re-poll two districts where irregularities were alleged.
Friday's elections, conducted after Kumaratunge's dismissal of Parliament and the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister and her arch-rival Wickremesinghe, was fought mainly over the handling of peace talks with Tamil Tiger rebels.
