PM accuses Cong of pulling down four Govts in past
Monday, April 5 2004 16:49 Hrs (IST)

Lucknow: Flaying the stability card, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today (Apr 5, 2004) said frequent change of guard at the Centre would be disastrous for the country and accused Congress of pulling down four Governments in the past.

"What will happen to the country if the Prime Minister changes every six months?" he said addressing an election rally after welcoming Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani's 'Bharat Uday Yatra' in Lucknow.

Observing that the ensuing Lok Sabha polls were not ordinary elections, Vajpayee said they were "crucial" for the future of the country as only political stability could usher in development and progress.

Accusing the Congress of being responsible for bringing in political instability often, the Prime Minister, who shared the dais with Advani, said it had forced the change of Prime Ministers four times.

Advani charged Congress with not allowing Charan Singh, Chandra Shekhar, H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujral to continue in office as Prime Minister for long by pulling the rug under their feet.

Making a scathing attack on the Congress, Vajpayee said the Opposition party derided his Government when it talked of achieving eight per cent growth.

The leader of the Opposition Sonia Gandhi went to the extent of branding us as "day dreamers" by likening our target to "Mungeri Lal key hasin sapney" (Mungeri Lal's day dreams).

Pointing out at the 10.4 per cent growth rate achieved by the country, he wondered as to what Congress would say now.

Vajpayee said that his Government has made the economy strong with a huge a Forex reserve and transforming the country from that of a borrower to a lender.

Vajpayee said while achieving this, his Government has ensured that there was neither inflation nor price rise and there was a bountiful stock of food grains.
