Monday, April 5 2004 14:00 Hrs (IST)

Muzaffarpur: Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president and Defence Minister George Fernandes today (Apr 5, 2004) filed his papers for Muzaffarpur parliamentary constituency.

Accompanied by Railway Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Digvijay Singh, Fernandes went to the district collectorate in Muzaffarpur and submitted his paper to district magistrate-cum-returning officer, Amrit Lal Meena.

Fernandes had emerged victorious from the seat for four times in 1977, 1980, 1989 and 1991 prior to shifting to Nalanda, the seat he represented three times in a row in 1996,1998 and 1999.

Fernandes decided to return to Muzaffarpur from Nalanda this time following people's demand, party sources said.

He is pitted against the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) nominee Bhagwan Lal Sahni in Muzaffarpur.
