We won't let Assamese be minority in their homeland: PM Tuesday, April 6 2004 15:26 Hrs (IST)
Guwahati:
Promising not to allow the Assamese to become a minority in their homeland, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today advocated talks between New Delhi and Dhaka to stop large-scale infiltration from across the border.
"This is a very decisive moment in the history of Assam, as it is full of problems - infiltration being the most serious one. We will not allow the Assamese community to be reduced to a minority in their own home," Vajpayee told a mammoth rally in Guwahati on Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) Foundation Day and to kick start the election campaign in the State.
"We assisted Bangladesh to get Independence and Bangladeshis should be happy residing in their own country, but it seems they have certain serious problems, which are forcing their citizens to infiltrate into our country. This is a very dangerous trend," he said.
The need of the hour, he said, was for both nations to sit together and discuss the problems for arriving at a solution.
"When I met the Bangladesh Prime Minister I pointed out this problem, but unfortunately she straightaway denied knowledge of any large scale infiltration into our country," the Prime Minister said.
"We want to solve this problem and put up a barbed wire fence on the border to safeguard it, so that no one should be allowed to come and encroach on our homes," he said.
