AP polls: TDP and Cong fight it out in e-media
Tuesday, April 6 2004 14:36 Hrs (IST)

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court's directive to the Election Commission (EC) notwithstanding, political advertisements carrying messages punctuated with sarcastic, snide and subtle remarks on rival parties are being beamed on all private television channels in Andhra Pradesh.

Though care has been taken not make direct attacks, the message is loud in decibels and clear in vision with Telugu Desam (TDP) and Congress fighting the battle "bout by byte" on the arena of the electronic media.

Skits and short films produced by TDP and Congress as advertisement material, were beamed by six odd private channels, each depicting the shortcomings of their rivals while seeking a mandate.

"We did not use the name of our rival party even in a single frame but have tried to project our priorities and our promises if we are voted to power," film and TV artiste D Subrahmanyam, in charge of Congress publicity wing said.

Poking fun at the ongoing party affairs, snide remarks on the behavioural pattern of leaders and parties, paradoxical projection of people and situations with contrasting end results have been the storyline selected by the political parties to drive their message "home" (into drawing rooms).

Highlighting the infighting among Congress, TDP released an advertisement where a bus-load of leaders fight with each other to capture the driver's seat and in the process the bus swirls and dashes against a tree on the wayside.

Another bus, runs smoothly with TDP flags afloat and the message says, "one bus, one driver, one party, one leader to lead you to the intended destiny" as the crestfallen leaders from Congress bus watch in dismay.
