Tuesday, April 6 2004 12:45 Hrs (IST)

Aizawl: Fifty-five US Armymen belonging to the Alaska-based 21st Infantry Battalion of the US Task Force are undergoing anti-terrorism training at the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS) in the Mizoram-Assam border town of Vairengte.

The training, called Joint Indo-US Defence Cooperation exercise commenced from March 28 and would last for 20 days, CIJWS officials said adding it was the second joint exercise with the US Army at Vairengte.

Established in 1970, the CIJWS would soon be upgraded and renamed as College of Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism, the officials said.

Mizoram Governor Amolak Rattan Kohli visited the CIJWS yesterday (Apr 5, 2004) and addressed the instructors and trainees. He said the joint exercise would go a long way in tackling global terrorism.

Col. Wise Carner, Commanding Officer of the US Task Force, also spoke.
