NDA agenda to incorporate Ram temple issue
Wednesday, April 7 2004 15:04 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA)'s National Agenda of Governance, which had kept aside the contentious issues of Ayodhya, Uniform Civil Code and Article 370 in the past, is expected to make a departure in the current elections by incorporating the Ram temple issue with emphasis on its resolution through dialogue.

The issue of foreign origin may also be reflected in the document, to be released tomorrow, with a promise to enact a law for banning non-natural born citizens from holding high Constitutional offices.

"The NDA Agenda for Governance would include the suggestion made in the Vision Document of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) that the Ayodhya issue be resolved through dialogue between the two communities," highly-placed BJP sources said.

It was felt that keeping the issue aside would not help in bringing about better relations between the two communities and that there was need to settle it amicably and as soon as possible, the sources said. A suggestion of BJP to incorporate the item this time has found favour with the NDA constituents, the sources said.

With the foreign origin issue of Congress president Sonia Gandhi being taken up by not only BJP leaders but also members of the NDA coalition and supporting parties like Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the agenda is expected to have in it a suggestion to bring a legislation in Parliament barring persons of foreign origin from holding high Constitutional posts like President, Prime Minister and Chief Justice of India.

"In the event of NDA getting a majority in the coming Lok Sabha elections, we would bring a legislation in this regard barring persons of foreign origin from holding these high Constitutional offices," sources said.

The agenda would be emphasising on the need for good governance, development and peace and is expected to highlight the recent steps taken by the Government towards improving Indo-Pakistan relations, the sources said.

"It was under the leadership of Vajpayee that there has been progress in Indo-Pakistan relations and the recent tour of Pakistan by the Indian cricket team was possible. Given another mandate would help in improving these relations," the sources said.

It is also likely to have an economic package for the minorities in an attempt to ensure that they "do not take to the path of terrorism and violence and also enable them to have confidence in the BJP-led NDA Government", the sources added.

"With more and more Muslims having confidence in BJP, these benefits would help in bringing them closer to the NDA as also the BJP," they said.

The manifesto would enumerate the achievements of the Vajpayee Government in the last five years, specially like the construction of the highways and improving connectivity like telephones and other forms of communication and stress on the need to work towards furthering these programmes and for this give the Government another five years to complete the unfinished task, the sources said.

It would also emphasis on the need to speed up the project of interlinking of rivers so as to overcome the perennial problem of drought and floods, they said.
