Manipur poll security beefed up due to ultra threat Thursday, April 8 2004 11:46 Hrs (IST)

Elaborate security measures would be taken in view of election boycott call by militants on first phase Lok Sabha polls on April 20 in Outer Manipur seat with deployment of senior police officials at various places, official sources said today (Apr 8, 2004).
Every effort would be made to enable voters at far flung places to exercise their franchise in Outer Manipur which included all the interior five hill districts of the State, the sources said adding all steps would also be taken to ensure security of the electorate.
Besides beefing up security measures in the hill districts, security patrol would also be intensified to intercept movement of the armed insurgents.
Major separatist outfit United National Liberation Front (UNLF) had earlier called for boycott of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls in the State to what it termed "intensify revolutionary movement in Manipur".
IGP (Law and Order) V Zathang would supervise security arrangements in Ukhrul district while IGP (Training) A Romenkumar Singh in coordination with DIG (range three) A Rahman and DIG (range four) P Malama would monitor security activities in Senapati district, the sources said.
DIG (range two) A.Prakash and DIG (range one) A Daval and DIG (armed police one) D.Mishra would supervise security arrangements in Chandel and Tamenglong districts on the first first phase polling, the sources said.
IGP (training) Romenkumar Singh with the support of some DIGs would also monitor security activities in Churachandpur district bordering Mizoram.
