AP polls: Naidu cracks whip at Desam party rebels Thursday, April 8 2004 14:18 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad:
Stung by the growing dissidence and rebellion in the party, TDP (Telugu Desam Party) supremo N Chandrababu Naidu today (Apr 8, 2004) warned rebels to fall in line or face severe action as the candidate selection process was focussed more on providing social justice to deprived sections.
"We had to accommodate certain sections to provide social justice and some sacrifices had to be made in the larger interest of the party," Naidu said at his Jubilee Hills residence.
Cracking the whip on rebels, Naidu said, "They have to fall in line in a couple of days and the party will take a very serious note of such indiscipline."
Asserting that some strong aspirants were denied tickets due to various reasons, Naidu said, their services will be utilised for party work and called up all disgruntled elements to fall in line for a "better tomorrow".
On social justice, Naidu said, TDP has given 50 seats to women, the highest number ever given in the state so far while Congress has allotted just 21 seats to the fairer sex.
Irrespective of the reservation bill for women, TDP will allot 33 percent seats to women in the coming polls, he said.
Since 1994, TDP has increased the number of seats to women from 17 to 34 in 1999 and 50 now, while Congress went up from 18 to 26 in 1999 and has come down to 21 this time, he said.
While allotting tickets, TDP has reduced the number from other castes and increased the number for weaker sections, he said adding SCs got 39, BCs 62, Sts 16 and minorities 7 which is a good reflection in the given circumstances.
