Shillong: Nationalist Trinamool Congress (NTC) leader Purno A Sangma was served a notice for his alleged breach of code of conduct in electioneering for the Tura parliamentary seat in Meghalaya's Garo hills region.

The notice was served on Sangma by the returning officer of Tura Lok Sabha seat, s Jagannathan, after the Congress complained to him alleging Sangma's breach of conduct in respect of posters pasted by his party in his support. Confirming this, Jagannathan said today (Apr 8, 2004) that G Arengh, an election agent of Congress nominee Mukul Sangma in Tura, alleged in the complaint that PA Sangma in his poll-related posters used NTC as the party name, which he said was "neither registered nor recognised by the Election Commission", while filed nominations on behalf of the All India Trinamool Congress.

Another complaint levelled against the former Lok Sabha speaker alleged that Sangma did not mention the name of the printer in election posters, Jagannathan, also the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills district, said.

He said that the notice, which was served to Sangma yesterday (Apr 7, 2004), required him to reply within five days of the receipt.

Asked what action would be initiated against Sangma if he found guilty, Jagannathan said the reply would be forwarded to the Election Commission and steps would be taken as per its directives.
