Inflation, farmers' suicide in NDA rule: Sonia Saturday, April 10 2004 15:15 Hrs (IST)
Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh):
Flaying the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government for propagating the "feel good factor", Congress president Sonia Gandhi today (Apr 10, 2004) claimed the farmers are committing suicide and there is a steep increase in prices.
"Vajpayee Government is saying that every things is fine, when prices are increasing steeply and farmers are committing suicide. But they should remember they cannot misguide people for a longer period by saying every thing is fine," Gandhi told a Congress rally in the Lalbagh Maidan, the headquarters of the naxal-infested Bastar division.
Accusing the Vajpayee Government of spending crores of rupees from the exchequer for publicity of its "false achievements", she said "the same money could have been used for developmental works".
"In the last five years also the Centre had not made any policy for the development of tribals, which could be praised," she said and claimed they had sold off several public sector units, which were providing employment to the crores of people.
The Congress president said she is struggling for betterment of the tribals, and also asked the voters of the Bastar (tribal reserved) seat, where the leader of Opposition Mahendra Karma is the Congress candidate, to support her in the struggle and vote him to power.
