10 women killed, scores injured in a stampede in UP

Lucknow: At least ten people, mostly women, were killed and scores injured in a stampede that broke out during distribution of sarees by senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lalji Tandon on his birthday today (Apr 12, 2004).

The function was organised at the Chandrashekhar Azad Park where nearly 5,000 women had gathered to collect sarees.

Official sources said ten women died in the stampede while unofficial reports put the toll at 21.

The injured included children also. They have been admitted to various hospitals in the city.
