Indo-Pak talks in August must produce results: Pak Wednesday, April 14 2004 22:06 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad:
Pakistan today (April 14, 2004) said that talks with India in July-August to resolve all outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, "must" produce results rather that just going through the motions.
"When the Foreign Secretaries and Foreign Ministers meet, we must produce results. We should not just go through the motions," Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesman Masood Khan told a media briefing.
As per the road map for talks chalked out by both the countries the Foreign Secretaries of both countries would meet in July-August and their meeting would be followed by Foreign Ministers to discuss issues relating to peace and security and confidence-building measures (CBMs).
Observing that the two countries are currently engaging each other, he said, "Rhetoric between the two countries has come down drastically. There have been very positive statements coming from New Delhi. The statements being made in Islamabad have been restrained. There is more room for engagement. The effort here is to make the effort result-oriented," he said.
Asked what were Pakistan's expectations, Khan again said, "Yes, we must produce results (at the talks)."
Referring to President Pervez Musharraf's comments calling for forward movement on Kashmir at the talks, he said, "The President of Pakistan has stated very clearly there should be forward movement on Kashmir. These talks should be productive and they should produce results. The President has also said this is an important statement."
