Explain your marital status: Cong to Dharmendra
Saturday, April 17 2004 20:04 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Seeking an explanation from Bollywood actor Dharmendra for not mentioning his wife's name in the nomination filed by him for Bikaner Lok Sabha seat, Congress today (Apr 17, 2004) said this was a serious matter and the Election Commission should immediately look into it.

"It is a serious matter. Dharmendra should explain why he has not mentioned his wife's name in the affidavit. He has given a wrong statement in his nomination papers. The Election Commission should immediately take note of it," party spokesman Kapil Sibal told reporters in New Delhi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should be held accountable for fielding Dharmendra who himself has claimed marrying two women, Prakash Kaur and Ayesha Bi (Hema Malini), the latter a Bollywood actress and BJP Rajya Sabha MP, Sibal said.

Dharmendra gave details of assets owned by him and his wife in the nomination papers but did not mention her name, leaving a question mark if the assets were of his first wife or the second, he said.

Sibal said by not mentioning the name of his wife in the nomination papers, the BJP candidate had violated directions of the Election Commission.
