Stampede: FIR filed against Lalji Tandon

Lucknow: An FIR (first information report) was filed today (April 17, 2004) against senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lalji Tandon on whose birthday celebrations distribution of sarees caused a stampede in which 22 women were killed in Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's constituency recently.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Sharma filed the FIR with Mahanagar Police against Tandon and others under section 171 (B) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for offering inducements to poor voters in Lucknow to exercise their franchise in favour of the BJP candidate.
