Saree distribution function organisers surrender Saturday, April 17 2004 19:06 Hrs (IST)

The organisers of the saree distribution programme in which 22 people were killed in a stampede on April 12, Brijendra Murari Yadav and his associate surrendered in a court in Lucknow today (Apr 17, 204), which later enlarged them on bail.
Yadav and Manoj Singh surrendered before additional chief judicial magistrate (CBI) R N Singh and were later granted bail.
The magistrate allowed their bail applications as the offences were bailable and directed their release on furnishing two sureties of Rs. 10,000 each and a personal bond of the same amount.
Another accused in the matter Dhyan Singh, who had surrendered before the court on Thursday (Apr 15, 2004), was also granted bail.
Twenty-one poor women and an infant were trampled to death in the stampede during the saree distribution programme organised to celebrate the birthday of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the leader of the Opposition in Uttar Pradesh Assembly Lalji Tandon.
