EC sanctions financial aid to kin of stampede victims

Lucknow: The Election Commission has given permission to the Uttar Pradesh Government to provide ex-gratia financial assistance to the families of 23 victims of stampede during the saree distribution programme on April 12 to celebrate the birthday of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lalji Tandon.

The State Government had announced ex-gratia assistance of Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the victims and had sought permission from the Commission in view of the model code of conduct presently in force in the State.

Permission to disburse the assistance has been granted by the Election Commission, the State Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Sharma told reporters today (April 19, 2004).
