Indefinite curfew in parts of Hardwar after clashes
Wednesday, April 21 2004 15:46 Hrs (IST)

Hardwar: An indefinite curfew was imposed today (April 21, 2004) in parts of this holy city following escalating violence triggered by an eve-teasing incident that left over 100 people injured, three of them seriously, officials said.

Local administration officials said the curfew was imposed as the situation became very tense in which groups of people attacked two police posts forcing police to open fire this morning. Hardwar District Magistrate S K Maheshwari said the curfew would continue till the situation comes back to normal in the city.

At least three people were injured in the police firing, official sources said. The situation turned ugly when irate local businessmen indulged in stone throwing and arson incidents following a late night lathicharge that left nearly 50 people injured immediately after some policemen allegedly teased the wife of a local businessman last night.

The situation became tense when police lathicharged the local businessmen who had collected to lodge a strong protest.

A police post was also set on fire at Kharkhari area last night.
