Exit polls not believable, Cong to fare better: Dixit
Wednesday, April 21 2004 18:13 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: Rubbishing the exit polls claims of a downslide for Congress in the Lok Sabha polls, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit today (Apr 21, 2004) said the party expects good results in view of the "extraordinarily successful" 'Jansampark Abhiyan' of party president Sonia Gandhi.

"The exit poll results are not believable since they have proved miserably wrong in the recent Assembly polls in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh," she told reporters in Mumbai.

The exit polls predicted landslide victory for Congress in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and a 'neck to neck' fight in Madhya Pradesh, all of which proved wrong, Dixit, who is on a visit to the city to campaign for party candidates, said

Such exit polls can 'unfairly' influence common people who do not have idea of their truthfulness, the Delhi Chief Minister said, adding that she was personally in favour of a ban on them.

Commenting on her party's prospects in Lok Sabha polls, she said that the Jansampark Abhiyan held by party president Sonia Gandhi was extraordinarily successful and was welcomed overwhelmingly wherever she went.

"We hope that response will convert into votes," Dixit said.

She lamented the increasing personal attacks on Sonia Gandhi by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including by Prime Minister himself, during the ongoing poll campaigning.

Although the Prime Minister advocated that neither side should resort to personal attacks, he himself did not hesitate to make few such attacks, she said.
