Tigers seek early talks with Lankan Government Wednesday, April 21 2004 12:03 Hrs (IST)
Colombo:
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supremo V Prabhakaran asked his 22 proxy legislators in Sri Lanka's new Parliament to put pressure on the minority Government to resume peace talks with the rebels based on their blueprint for self-rule.
Prabhakaran met the 22 legislators, elected from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), in the Northern rebel-held town of Kilinochchi.
The Tiger leader thanked minority Tamils for voting for the TNA and told the TNA MPs that they should pressure the Government to discuss the Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) proposal, rebel sources said.
Prabhakaran met the legislators in the company of his intelligence chief Pottu Amman and the head of the Tiger political wing S P Thamilselvan and several other Tiger seniors.
The TNA had earlier said the Government must recognise the Tamil Tigers as the sole representatives of the island's minority Tamil community, which accounts for about 12.5 per cent of the 19 million population.
The Tigers also warned this month that they will return to fighting unless a new Government considers their ISGA proposal which President Chandrika Kumaratunga has already described as a stepping stone to a separate State.
