Return Pak's looted money: Musharraf to foreign banks Thursday, April 22 2004 22:21 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad:
Indirectly hitting out at former Pakistani leaders for "looting and plundering" the country's coffers, President Pervez Musharraf has urged foreign banks to return billions of Dollars, which he said had been stolen by "corrupt" politicians.
"The biggest chunk of corruption in Pakistan has been by the leaders themselves, they have been looting the wealth and stashing it in western banks, offshore accounts...Western banks are flourishing on this money," he told the closing session of the three-day international conference on United Nations Convention against corruption organised by Pakistan National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Islamabad.
"We must stop this loot money laundering in Western banks through legislation and UN resolutions - this is the biggest breakthrough that the developed world can give to the developing countries," he said.
"Give billions of Dollars back to us," he urged and said no one should be allowed to take billions of Dollars away - that is the biggest source of corruption.
The President did not name the leaders, but he has often accused former Prime Ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif of "looting and plundering" Pakistan's treasuries.
His hard-hitting comments on money laundering came in the midst of efforts by his Government to send former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's imprisoned husband, Asif Ali Zardari to Switzerland in response to summons issued by a Swiss court in connection with a money laundering case during Bhutto's tenure.
