SC to hear plea to ban exit polls on Monday

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today (Apr 23, 2004) posted to Monday (Apr 26, 2004) hearing on a Public Interested Litigation (PIL) seeking ban on publication, broadcast and telecast of exit polls till the final phase of elections is completed.

The PIL filed by an advocate was mentioned by Counsel P S Narasimha before a bench of Justice R C Lahote and Justice Ashok Bhan which said it will be taken up on Monday.

Petitioner D K Thakur sought a direction to the Election Commission to ensure its guidelines on exit polls are enforced.

The petitioner said that opinion and exit polls were contrary to Section 126 of Representation of People Act and "affected the mental makeup of the electorate and influenced the exercise of franchise by them".
