Saturday, April 24 2004 21:54 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Setting the record straight, Congress today (Apr 24, 2004) said party chief Sonia Gandhi would be the Prime Ministerial candidate in the event of Congress getting a majority in the Lok Sabha polls.

"Otherwise, the alliance partners will meet after the polls to decide on the issue," Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters in New Delhi.

Singhvi said this when asked to comment on Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) query on who would lead the Congress alliance, as Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Laloo Yadav too was a claimant for the top post.

Senior party leaders Manmohan Singh and Oscar Fernandes had already clarified party's viewpoint on the matter saying Gandhi would be the Prime Minister in case the party gets majority on its own.
